Since 1985, Stephen Evans-Freke has financed the development of drugs in the fields of cancer, arthritis, autoimmune disorders, heart attacks, growth disorders, hemophilia and dry eye whose peak annual sales total more than $28 billion combined.
Mr. Evans-Freke was a leading member of the team which launched Genentech, the first Biotech IPO in market history. “One of the most spectacular market debuts in recent history,” is how the Wall Street Journal described Genentech’s public offering in 1980. Since then, while continuing to dedicate himself to financing breakthrough therapies for cancer and myriad diseases, he has been pursuing his passion for nurturing new businesses.

In 2013, Mr. Evans-Freke founded, and is the chairman of, AeroMD, the leading Caribbean-based air ambulance and emergency medical response company. “Our team members get out of bed every day to serve the people of the Caribbean,” said Mr. Evans-Freke. “As the only air ambulance service with ICU-equipped aircraft and medical teams on the ground in the US Virgin Islands, we save lives every day.”
CROSSMATCH TECHNOLOGIES
This company was a pioneer in forensic fingerprint matching and has evolved into a world leader in risk-based composite identity authentication and forensic biometric identity management. Mr. Evans-Freke was one of the leading investors and Director of CrossMatch Technologies from 2002-10. Founded in 1996 in a garage, it was acquired by HID Global in 2017.
HIGHCROSS HEALTH FOODS
His keen interest in the organic food industry prompted Mr. Evans-Freke to join up with his son Yorick Evans-Freke in 2018 to establish HighCross Health Foods Ltd in Ireland. The company’s goal is to become the leading international brand of organic high-protein health foods based on organic Irish dairy. He is also working with the Royal Dublin Society and others to promote sustainable farming practices in Ireland.
CASTLE FREKE GIN
A dry martini connoisseur, Mr. Evans-Freke is delighting in one of his newest endeavors, to develop what will hopefully become Ireland’s first super-premium organic gin to hit the global luxury spirits market. A combination of specialized ingredients harvested from the fields and woods of his personal estate in Ireland and rare citrus fruits from the south of France, are the distinguishing ingredients in Castle Freke gin. They are being distilled in the finest copper still in the gin industry thus establishing Castle Freke gin as the obvious choice for the dry martini connoisseur.
WATER ISLAND DEVELOPMENT CO. LLC
In 2014, a group led by Stephen Evans-Freke won a highly competitive Request for Proposal put out by the US Virgin Islands to develop a resort on the “fourth” Virgin Island, Water Island. The Water Island Development corporation, chaired by Mr. Evans-Freke, won the RFP courtesy of his vision to build a low-density, super luxury resort, marina and marina village, whose architectural inspiration pays homage to the graceful historic Danish buildings of downtown Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas.
